Learn how to safely install a cloth covered styrene pendant shade. Step-by-step guide with tips for handling the translucent polystyrene backer and fabric cover.
Quick answer
Installing a cloth covered styrene shade is straightforward: mount the canopy to the ceiling, wire the fixture, then attach the shade using the included hardware. Handle the styrene backer gently to avoid scratches.
Why cloth covered styrene shades need care
The translucent polystyrene backer gives these shades a soft glow, but it scratches more easily than glass or metal. The linen-cotton canvas cover is durable, but the styrene underneath requires a careful touch during installation.
Work on a clean, soft surface and avoid overtightening any screws that contact the backer. A light grip is enough.
Installation steps
- Turn off power and prepare: Switch off the circuit breaker. Remove the old fixture and inspect the ceiling box for a secure mounting bracket. Check that the new shade’s canopy fits the box opening. If the canopy does not cover the box, you may need a larger canopy or a box extension ring.
- Wire the fixture: Connect the fixture wires to the house wires: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), and green or bare to ground. Use wire nuts and tuck the connections into the box. Leave enough slack so the connections sit fully inside the box — pinched wires can cause shorts.
- Mount the canopy: Screw the canopy to the mounting bracket. Tighten evenly so it sits flush against the ceiling. Do not overtighten — this can warp the canopy or damage the shade attachment points.
- Attach the cloth covered shade: Slide the shade over the socket or screw it onto the threaded ring provided with the fixture. For Ravenhill Studio’s Slide family, the shade fits over the socket and is secured with a retaining ring. If the shade feels tight, rotate it gently — never force it. Forcing can crack the styrene backer.
- Install the bulb and test: Screw in a bulb of the recommended wattage (check the fixture label). Restore power and switch on. Look for even light distribution with no dark spots or visible scratches near the bulb. Use an LED bulb to keep heat low — high heat can soften styrene over time.
Product facts
- Cloth Covered Styrene: Linen and cotton blend canvas over a translucent polystyrene backer. The fabric cover gives a warm, textured look while the styrene backer diffuses light evenly — but the backer needs gentle handling to stay clear.
