Step-by-step instructions for wiring and mounting the Peek Spot Square sconce. Includes tools, safety tips, and common mistakes to avoid.

Quick answer

Installing the Peek Spot Square sconce involves wiring it to a standard junction box, mounting the canopy flush to the wall, and adjusting the swivel for your desired light direction.

Before you start: what makes this sconce different

The Peek Spot Square is a hardwired, ceiling-mount fixture with a custom in-line swivel and clevis for rotation and tilt. Unlike a typical wall sconce, it mounts flush to the ceiling or wall and requires a junction box. The square canopy covers a standard 4-inch box, but check your box depth before wiring.

Installation steps

  1. Turn off power and verify the junction box: Switch off the breaker for the circuit. Remove the old fixture and confirm the junction box is securely fastened and can support the sconce weight (about 5 lbs). Use a voltage tester to confirm no live wires.
  2. Connect the wiring: Match the fixture wires to the house wires: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), and green or copper to ground. Use wire nuts and wrap with electrical tape. Do not force wires into the box; trim excess length to avoid pinching.
  3. Mount the canopy flush to the ceiling: Tuck the wires carefully into the box, then align the square canopy over the box. Secure with the provided screws. The canopy should sit flush without gaps. If the canopy does not sit flush, the box may be too deep — use a spacer or box extender.
  4. Attach the arm and adjust the swivel: Screw the Peek Spot arm into the canopy. Loosen the in-line swivel and clevis, aim the light head, then tighten both to lock the position. Mark the final angle before tightening to avoid repeated adjustments.
  5. Install the bulb and test: Insert a compatible bulb (check fixture label for max wattage). Restore power and test the light. Adjust the aim if needed. Use an LED bulb to reduce heat and extend fixture life.
